Responding to Free-Form Student Questions in ERM-Tutor
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present ERM-Tutor, a constraint-based tutor that teaches logical database design (i.e. mapping conceptual to logical database schemas). Students practice this procedural task in ERM-Tutor by solving each step and receiving feedback on their solutions. We also present a new feature added to the system, which enables students to ask free-form questions. A preliminary evaluation carried out on ERM-Tutor investigated how students use free-form questions, and provided promising results. We plan to perform a bigger study in early

Processing Language Input in the CIRCSIM-Tutor Intelligent Tutoring System
We have replaced the input understanding component of CIRCSIM-Tutor, an intelligent tutoring system that engages the student in Socratic dialogue. Students type free-text answers to the computer’s questions. Even though the questions can be answered very simply, the variety of student responses prompted us to make the understanding component more robust. The new software also enables the tutor ...
متن کاملERM-Tutor an ER-to-Relational Mapping Tutor
Relational Databases are extremely commonplace in today’s society. Because of this the skill of designing such databases is often taught in university courses, where part of this skill involves being able to map from a conceptual schema to relational database tables. This is a mapping algorithm that maps from the Entity Relationship conceptual schema to relational database tables, and applying ...
متن کاملStudent Question-Asking Patterns in an Intelligent Algebra Tutor
Cognitive Tutors are proven effective learning environments, but are still not as effective as one-on-one human tutoring. We describe an environment (ALPS) designed to engage students in question-asking during problem solving. ALPS integrates Cognitive Tutors with Synthetic Interview (SI) technology, allowing students to type free-form questions and receive pre-recorded video clip answers. We p...
متن کاملImproving (Meta)Cognitive Tutoring by Detecting and Responding to Uncertainty
We hypothesize that enhancing computer tutors to respond to student uncertainty over and above correctness is one method for increasing both student learning and self-monitoring abilities. We explore this hypothesis using data from an experiment with a wizarded spoken tutorial dialogue system, where tutor responses to uncertain and/or incorrect student answers were manipulated. Our results sugg...
متن کاملTutor Modeling Versus Student Modeling
The current paradigm in student modeling has continued to show the power of its simplifying assumption of knowledge as a binary and monotonically increasing construct, the value of which directly causes the outcome of student answers to questions. Recent efforts have focused on optimizing the prediction accuracy of responses to questions using student models. Incorporating individual student pa...
